michigan house and senate and announced their plans to force through a change in michigan laws for the so-called right to work law. by the end of that same day, republicans had introduced and passed right to work bills. there was no real debate. there were no hearings. and to make matters worse, they manipulated the process to prevent the voters in michigan from ever reviewing their actions. why do i say that? because michigan law allows voter referendums on most laws. but has an exception for appropriations bills. so the republicans in the legislature attached their antilabor provisions to an appropriations bill to deny voters in michigan the chance to even be heard on it. but here's the key thing about the american people: when we're fighting for our families and our children's future, we'll not be bullied, nor will we be silence pedestrian. this week's events in michigan illustrate this powerfully. ordinary people with bills to pay and worries on their mind are taking time to stand together, shoulder to shoulder and say enough is enough. mr. president, this is not, again, just about

a lot of small family farms, farms in northern michigan wiped out. in my home state late freezes in the spring caused cherry producers to lose practically their entire crop right off the bat. it warmed up, the buds came out, then they had a deep freeze; killed everything. our growers produce 75% of the u.s. supply of cherries. that's around 270 million pounds. and the cherry producers experienced 98% loss. now in our amendment, in the disaster bill and in the farm bill, we give them some help because they spent the rest of the crop year this year having to pay to maintain the orchards and the frees, eating the costs and hoping the trees will bounce back next year and produce a crop. so they have all the costs of maintaining everything but no revenue coming in. cherry producers were also forced to fight spreading diseases like cherry leaf spot and bacterial tinker, making the trees even more costly to maintain and at risk of loss. they didn't just lose their crop this year. they had to invest a lot of money to save their orchards without having any do

i ask folks around michigan, what does that mean to you? well, one constituent said that's four months' groceries. four months. of feeding her family is what we're talking about. if the house of representatives doesn't act. $2,200 would buy you 650 gallons of gas. for the average commuter back and forth to work every day, that would get you back and forth to work for three years. on the tax increase that middle-class families are facing if the house does not act. $2,200 will buy families in michigan 550 gallons of milk for their families. so we're talking about a lot of money that's at stake for families. in many cases that number is higher than $2,200. and house republicans are holding families across this country hostage at driems -- christmastime over a fight about whether or not millionaires and billionaires in this country should pay a little bit more to solve our long-term deficit problem. it's unbelievable to me that we continue to see this kind of inaction coming from the house of representatives. we all know that this can be done i
